Brownsea Island

I didn't travel during Ramzan (July 2014) and was feeling the quest for a short trip in August just after Eid. There is also the feeling that summer is just slipping away and I should make use of remaining days to the maximum as this is the best time for travel in UK. Mike, office colleague, told me about beautiful islands near Poole, Dorset. So I started searching for attractions near Poole harbor and found the images of Brownsea Island. The very first thing came to my mind when I saw the entrance of the Island was that of the movie Shutter Island. That's it! Journey planned! :) Going to an island should be a different experience anyway. Also, if I am lucky enough I might get to see red squirrel!!

On 9th August I left home early morning and went to Poole by train (via Reading->Basingstoke->Pool route). It took around 2h:25min overall from Bracknell. I walked to the Quay (which is about 15 minutes away from station) through the Poole town center. A small, but decent town. In the Quay, I saw many boats and Kioske's for different boats. And there was a yellow Kioske which arranged tickets for Brownsea Island Ferry Ltd. I bought a ticket (£10) and took a side seat in the open top ferry. It is a return ticket which includes taking a trip around other 6 islands in the Poole Harbour while returning from Brownsea island. Ferry started moving slowly at 1.00pm and the journey to Brownsea island started. We moved past many small boats and cruises and in 20 minutes we've reached the island. Last ferry from the island was at 4.50pm, so I got just over 3 hours to wander around.

The Brownsea Castle in the first three pictures is now leased to Jon Lewis Partnership and public don't have access to it. The fourth picture shows where we actually got down. It will lead you to reception.

Brownsea island is managed by National Trust, UK. Long time back, this area was a big hill and most of it's land was taken over by the sea after the ice age. At present this island boasts variety of wildlife species and it is home to rare red squirrel. The employees offered warm welcome and got myself a ticket for £6.60 (£6.00 without gift aid). They gave a route map which was very helpful. This map is very useful to know the view points, walking trails and woodland areas inside the island. Also this is at most useful when you got lost, as it happened to me once :-). If you want to explore the entire island, it would take around 3-4 hours depending on how fast you walk.

Started walking through the island and found a small bird view point. And moving on saw one tent and a group having food near by. Interesting thing was they were surrounded by couple of ducks, asking for food and they were quite happy with what they were given :). Then I saw a peacock fed by a family. I pulled the camera bag out and changed the lens quickly to get some pics.

Till now, I didn't feel like I'm inside an island as everything I saw was typically what I would see in a park (except for the peacock). Now that I got the map to check for directions, I quickly searched woodland, where you have more chances of seeing the red squirrel. And then it was just walking, walking and walking. It was good to get the feel of lost nature and I got to see some varieties of butterflies on the way. Now I was walking through heathland.

There were many view points on the way, and I got down to one of them and it was just beautiful experience. There were many families out there. Kids were digging holes and making different forms using the sand and some bricks on the beach. I spent about an hour there and clicked many pictures. As I was getting bit late and the last ferry from the island was at 4.50pm, I decided to go back to trails leading to woodlands. Some pictures from view point.

On the left, rocks were there, and water was leaking from them. It seemd to me that it was aftemath of lava eruption :)

I was tired and wanted to go back and get the earliest ferry back to Poole. I opened the map again and searched for the route back and started walking. I saw a visitor center (there are couple of them inside the island and they are marked on the map) which gives more details about the current point and gives an idea about trails and view points.I followed it and thought was taking the same route I had taken while coming to the view point, but I was actually going in the opposite direction!! Then I saw a guide. He told me it will take around an hour to get to reception from there and he advised me to take that route and finish the expedition. So actually, I was going in the right direction, after all :)  He had a look at the time and said, your last ferry is at 4.50pm, so you should walk fast and said,"You're young and fit man, you can do it!".

Even though It would be good to go back in the other direction which at least I remember, I was happy that, at least I'm exploring entire island. So I took the challenge and decided to take the route and finish off in an hour. And I've to say, it was the most scenic area in the whole island! :) The trip would've been just average or may be below average if I wouldn't have taken this trail. Brownsea Island is famous for Scouting which began in early 1900s. There is a monument for people who attended the first batch of scouting.

I got into the woodlands and I hardly seen any people. Just me and nature. I could hear whole lot of sounds (birds, sea) and it was bit scary, at times. When you are alone in such a place, you tend to think too much. But the whole setting was serene and beautiful that I started taking lot of pictures and it calmed my mind.  It was really a beautiful place, and I always dreamed of being in such place. I was in a hurry, so didn't spend much time, just took pictures and moved on. Suddenly I saw something moving behind woods and heath. I couldn't recognize at first, but then realized it was a peacock family. I took couple of pictures. A couple joined me in clicking pictures who came from opposite direction.

Now only thing I didn't see was the red squirrel. I thought may be I'm unlucky. God was so kind to me, from somewhere one red squirrel came and stood just in front of me. It posed as if it came only to pose for me :) And it then vanished in seconds!!

There is nature reserve on the way, near to reception where you can watch variety of  birds at a very small extra cost, but I had to hurry to reception. Quickly I reached reception and then got in to gift shop through which you exit the island. I looked at the watch and it was 4.48pm!! And I saw the ferry is ready to leave. I got into the ferry, and we said goodbye to Brownsea island! And I saw the guide who gave me route details, in the ferry. And with a smile, he said, You made it on time!! :)

The return journey to Poole was around 45 minutes as it would take you through other islands of Poole harbor. A tiring day came to close when I finally landed in the Quay. I went to a restaurant and had chicken biriyani (Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant) and went straight to train station. A day well spent!

My Photography Expeditions

Of late, I am travelling a lot, mostly in and around southern England. Most of the journeys are inspired by my passion for photography. Or may be, both travel and photography equally share the honors. I thought it would be good idea to write short travelogues about these trips so that it will be a good read later. Of course I will post some of the photos I've taken. So please watch this space. Keep smiling and clicking!

Check & Points

I heard somebody saying Life is a Race...
Nice phrase, right!
Bur certainly the race in our life has got lot of checkpoints.
Many of us are either unaware of or ignore them.
These are the much needed breaks' you require...
You can look at what happened in the past and prepare for the next step.
And try to be positive...
And I do not want to spend more time at the checkpoints..
I certainly want to be among them
Those who chose to climb up the ladder eventhough it's tough...

Save Trees!

Here is my first blog on Environmental Stability.....It's depicts a small conversation between a father and son. Happy reading....

************************************************************************************
Son: Dad, it's very hot here. I'm very tired.
Dad: Don't worry my boy. We'll go to the Children's Park. It's just 20 minutes walk, son.
Son: Children's Park! What's there Dad?
Dad: It has got lots of benches. Also there are some trees planted. So we can go there and take rest.
Son: WoW Dad, Trees!!! I've heard that trees will be big. Will it be bigger than flower plots kept in our house?
Dad: Yes son, tree will be quite big. Unlike our plastic flower pots, they will grow by time.

They entered the park and sat on a bench. Boy is very happy being there and enjoys the cool wind.

Son: So Dad, why there is no tree in our house and on the roads?
Dad: Son, if we plant tree in our house, where will we keep our car? How will you play soccer with your friends? We need space for our needs, son. If you plant a tree on the road, how will you ride your vehicle? How will you reach your school in 5 minutes? Also birds will make trees their home and make the surroundings very noisy and unclean.

Son: I'm feeling very good being here. I'm getting very enthusiastic and I can see a lot of birds here and hear different music. I want to be here always.
Dad: That's why the government planted trees here so you can enjoy.
Son: But how can I come here everyday, Dad? Our house is very far from here. I want these trees in my house and on the roads. Can you please help me Dad....?

Dad: Planting trees on the road will block the roads. And we'll not find space for city developments. Also there is a rule now which says tree should be planted only on parks.

Son: Then can you shift our house near to Children's Park? I want to be here only Dad and I want to know others' life (birds and other species)) too....
Dad: I'm sorry. It's time son. We'll go to our house.
Son: Or can we build our house like the birds do???

Plant and Save Trees (and thus the vivid species) before it's too late!

Im back friendzzzzzz...

Hi Friendzz....
It's been long time since I wrote something here...Even I was not visiting my blog. You know, Im very lazy guy...Anyway I thought I need to start writing again, atleast to kill time:-)

Nowadays we hear a lot on Global Warming. There are so many thoughts put by environment lovers and also by the scientsts to save our Earth and hence ourselves...

I support any activity in this regard. Development, mostly used word by politicians nowadays, is a good word to attract people. I believe in the development process which focuses on the welfare of the human beings and the vivid species on the earth, by keeping our environment healthy. Any damage to HOUSE will affect the residents badly. It's not the time to blame any nation or so whomever, for the damage we caused to environment so far. It's upto all of us to join hands together and work towards the common goal.

I thought to write something which will support this global cause. And I would be happy if I can pass the message to even 1 friend. You will see new post soon. Please join me on this. Thanks a lot friends........

It's Do or Die for India

Its Do or Die match for India today. When they face England in the Super 8 match tonight, India would be hoping to repeat the performance of 2007 T20 world cup where India crashed Engalnd in similar situation. Yuvraj was the star for India in that match and would be England's main target today. But T20 is all about the better performer on the pitch. Match against West Indies should be realty check for Team India where top order batsmen failed miserably, notwithstanding the good fielding display by West Indies though.

First of all I do not expect India to retain the T20 title, but still India can show their spirit. Either South Africa or Srilanka will win T20 this year.

India should get a total of 180 or above to defeat England in this crucial match if they bat first. Pieterson, Bopara and Collingwood would be the players to lookout for England.

If England is put to bat first, India should try to restrict them to 160 which is gettable for Indian batting lineup. Gambir should play a mentor role today (and not Dhoni!) and allow other batsmen to go for their shots. Dhoni should start hitting the ball as he used hit before. I cannot understand why he takes too much time for settling down in T20 where even 1 ball makes big difference. Raina and Yuvraj hold the key for India today. And if Yusuf gets going, England can start preparing for next T20.

Bowlers, I think RP Singh need to be given a chance in place of Ishant Sharma. RP might be expensive, but he gets wickets at crucial points. He is lot better than Ishant in T20.

For England, Anderson holds the key.

Hope for a close-finishing match today and I wish India good luck.

Kodaikanal Trip

It was a wonderful evening when we started our dream journey to Kodaikanal. Because of the long weekend due to Good Friday and Easter, all the buses were full packed. We were lucky enough to get the last 3 seats in the 'special bus'. Me and Vijith went to Majestic by auto together and Shinoj joined us from there. At 9.35pm bus started moving. As we know it was raining heavily in Kodaikanal since last week, we started our jounrney with all prayers. When we started climbing the hill from Dindigul, it was raining heavily outside. It was very scenic there. You will see a dam from the hilltop resembles a field filled with water. I tried to take snaps, but unfortunately could not capture the beauty at its best.

At the hilltop, it was mist everywhere. We reached Kodai bus stand at 11.40am. I called Alex chettan for the route to reach his cottage. He arranged a Travera from Kings Travels. The cottage was 3.5km away from town. We reached "Daney's guest house". We were given two bedrooms at one's cost. He is so kind. He called me before we left to Kodai saying it is better not to go there because of the heavy rain, even though that will affect his business. There was no current in whole Kodaikanal. It was drizzling outside.
We took bath in hot water. We were given Good Friday special appam. As it was Friday, i searched for a Masjid, and the room boy took me to Masjid. It was near by. By then it was okey situation for a walk as rain was stopped. But it was misty. We thought we will call taxi tomorrow as it is already noon. We all geared up for a walk through the mist. We had dosa with chicken curry gravy from a thattukada. Then pointed towards Upper lake view and Pillar Rock. Unfortuantely we could not see anything from upper lake view building because of the mist.

The shopkeepers told the same thing on Suicide point and Pillar rock. So we decided to move on to Kodai town town. It was a very misty evening. Truly, Kodai has been blessled with amazing natural beauty. I hope Kodaikanal will not get commercialized, so it will remain a paradise for a scenic lover. My camera flashed so many times.

To be Contd..
